International Youth Day 2014: How Are You Celebrating?

2014 International Youth Day: August 12 is a day set aside by the United Nations general assembly ( in 1999) to  celebrate youth all around the world. Today is International Youth Day.

The theme for this year's International Youth Day (IYD) is 'Youth and Mental Health', under the slogan, 'Mental Health Matters'. According to the UN, 'youth with mental health conditions can often experience stigma and discrimination, which can lead to exclusion and/or discourage these youth from seeking help for fear of being negatively 'labelled'.

What are you doing to support youth in this area? Let us know what you are doing today to mark the International Youth Day. Happy International Youth Day from Development Synergy!

  5. The UN's focus on mental health is certainly a very important call at this time. It is one of the most stigmatised areas in Nigeria requiring serious intervention. Thanks for putting the word out there through this blog. I spent today coincidentally being trained on challenging behaviours encountered in detecting and managing mental health problems in individuals; from autism to dementia. I hope that Nigeria will get to a point where we begin to look out for people with development, psychological or learning disabilities and providing them with the best opportunities to live their best lives.

  6. Thanks Annechia for sharing with us how you celebrated the international youth day. Certainly, the knowledge you have gained through the trainings you received on these mental health issues will sure contribute to reaching out to more people, through sensitization and education on mental health issues.

Indeed the stigma attached to mental health issues around the world is quite challenging. We look forward to days when we have more aware people out there who support youth with mental health issues as well as educate others.
