The
Graduate Volunteer Programme (GVP) is a volunteer programme which commenced in 2009.
This programme recruits graduates who have completed their National Youth
Service Corp (NYSC) as volunteers to volunteer in communities as teaching
assistants. The volunteers are also involved in community development activities
and small projects as part of the programme. During this programme, the
volunteers are equipped with ongoing trainings for their personal and
professional development. The GVP is currently working in Kwara, Nasarawa and
Kano States and it is a partnership between, VSO, NYSC and other implementing
partners in the states. Through this programme, many young graduates have
gained work experiences, confidence, job opportunities and awards.
The good news
is that the GVP, beginning from March 2013,
is being extended to in-service
corpers and will launch this pilot model in Nasarawa and Kwara States. It will
also, not focus on teaching only but have incorporated opportunities for volunteering
with Agric extension workers. So, this gives volunteers on the programme the
option to volunteer as a teaching assistant or with Agric extension workers.
On Tuesday, 12th
March, there will a sensitization in the Kwara and Nasarawa camps where more
details will be shared on the in-service and post service programmes of GVP. If
you know of any corper who wants to have a memorable experience in the next one
year and have been placed in these states, then tell them about GVP and to meet
with us at the camps! I will be in at the Kwara camp and open to your questions :-)
